What’s the difference between different foam densities and which is best for daily use?

Foam density determines how long your lounge maintains its shape and comfort. Measured in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³), density indicates how much material is packed into the foam, not how firm it feels. For daily-use lounges, you want high-density foam of 29kg/m³ or higher.

At Chilli Pip, we typically specify foam in the 31-35kg/m³ range for seat cushions, paired with firmness ratings between 130-200 Newtons, depending on your preference. The density number (first number) tells you durability, while the firmness number (second number) indicates feel. A 31-190 foam is a high-density medium-firm foam, ideal for most households.

Low-density foam (under 24kg/m³) feels comfortable initially but compresses permanently within 12-18 months, creating that “sagging couch” effect. Medium-density foam (24-28kg/m³) works for occasional-use furniture like guest room seating. High-density foam (29kg/m³ and above) maintains resilience through daily use for years.

For family lounges with children and pets, request foam density of at least 31kg/m³. Back cushions can use slightly lower density since they bear less weight. The firmness selection is a matter of personal preference—softer foams (130-150N) feel plush, while firmer options (190-250N) provide more support.

Remember, higher density costs more upfront but prevents the need to replace cushions or reupholster prematurely, making it the most economical choice in the long term.
